I’m just going to say right off the bat that I don’t get the appeal of Flappy Bird. There have been other games of this same “side-scrolling endless runner” genre that have done it a lot better as you are about to see in the list below. The controls are terrible as your bird drops like a rock and the pipes you have to avoid seem strangely familiar to anyone who has played a Super Mario Bros game. Is it because you play as a bird and they’re the hot animal of choice for mobile games? Who knows.
“You love me! You really love me! …. Why?”
Now with the popular app taken down by its creator for largely unknown reasons, it’s time to look at alternatives to satisfy that itch. There are so many copycats out there but these are the five titles I have the most personal experience playing.
Are you finding yourself caring less lately about keeping up with your Draw Something friends? You’re not alone. Recent data reports has indicated a drop of 5 million daily users of the mobile game in the past month.
Daily users for Draw Something reportedly dropped during the month of April from 14.3 million to 10.4 million. This happened shortly after Zynga, creators of games like Mafia Wars and Farmville, purchased the game’s developer, OMGPOP, back in March for $200 million. Do you think they’re feeling a bit of buyer’s remorse?
It’s interesting to consider Draw Something losing so many users within the same time frame that Angry Birds became the fastest selling mobile game ever. At one point not too long ago, there seemed to be no slowing down for the artistic app. The game was downloaded 50 million times within 50 days which ended up being a short lived record before Rovio‘s title shattered it.
I’m curious if Zynga can find a way to reinvent or upgrade Draw Something so that it doesn’t end up crashing and burning into App Store obscurity. What do you think needs to be done to make it fresh and fun again? Sound off your thoughts in the comments below.
