It’s episode 10 of The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews! Back in the very first episode, we took a look at the 2008 blockbuster, The Dark Knight, so in commemoration, we’re going to dip back into the Batman discs with this classic cinematic spin-off of Batman: The Animated Series. Batman: Mask of the Phantasm weaves an action-packed mystery story around Batman, Joker, and a ghostly crime boss killer running amok in Gotham City. We’ll look at the film plus get a little inside info on Batman: The Animated Series, the beloved cartoon show that inspired this film.
We kicked off this week of news with the huge announcement that Ben Affleck will play as Batman followed up by a fifth Pirates of the Caribbean movie in the works, the next Star Wars film being shot in 35mm, an actress throws in her bid to play as Harley Quinn on screen, and the new XCOM game coming out!
Every good nerd knows that exhilarating feeling you get when you start or complete a collection. It’s a sense of accomplishment and the journey can be heartbreaking, rewarding, and more times than not; very, very frustrating.
About three weeks ago, a local bookshop owner in my town of Columbia, TN asked me if I had seen the brand new pieces of comic art in the loft of his shop, ‘The Old Curiosity Bookshop.’ I regularly visit the loft because that’s where the traditional ‘geek media’ or fantasy, sci-fi, and comics are kept, but I had not viewed the pieces of art he was so proudly beaming about. That’s where I encountered the ‘Silver Buffalo’ for the first time.
This week’s Roundtable goes over a whole new slew of topics including how indie developer Phil Fish erupted on Twitter, Ryan Gosling and Zac Efron auditioning for Star Wars: Episode VII, and a new Batman potentially being cast!

Welcome to The DVD Shelf Movie Reviews – an ongoing web series where movies are celebrated, not incinerated! After the endless hate and mockery towards movies that circulates on the Internet nowadays, why not dedicate a show to a love of cinema? Weird, huh?
In each episode, I grab a movie off my own DVD shelf, discuss the film’s background, highlight its DVD/Blu-ray special features and end on why I recommend it. So, I figured the first episode should feature a movie that isn’t hard to like—the 2008 summer blockbuster The Dark Knight.
