There was much confusion and sadness surrounding the news that Irrational Games, the studio behind BioShock and BioShock Infinite, will be “winding down” leading to layoffs for all but 15 employees. Co-founder and creative director Ken Levine has been somewhat ambiguous for his reasons stating that he’ll be “starting a smaller, more entrepreneurial endeavor” in order to focus on “narrative-driven games for the core gamer that are highly replayable.” Is the reasoning behind this decision to downsize operations sound or does Mr. Levine have more to answer for ending a beloved games studio?
The Internet was blowing up last night when the first officially released trailer of Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy was finally shown. If you haven’t seen it yet, do yourself a favor and watch it now. Go ahead, I’ll wait.
Excited yet? What’s that? You don’t know who any of the characters are? That’s understandable considering the likes of Star-Lord, Groot, and Drax the Destroyer aren’t household names like Captain America, Thor, and Iron Man. That’s why Marvel decided to release character specific mini-trailers to give the world a taste of this oddball group.
We kick off the second episode of The Wolf Among Us with a surprising reveal followed by a Who Framed Roger Rabbit? reference, mistaken infidelity, and BOOBIES!
I’m just going to say right off the bat that I don’t get the appeal of Flappy Bird. There have been other games of this same “side-scrolling endless runner” genre that have done it a lot better as you are about to see in the list below. The controls are terrible as your bird drops like a rock and the pipes you have to avoid seem strangely familiar to anyone who has played a Super Mario Bros game. Is it because you play as a bird and they’re the hot animal of choice for mobile games? Who knows.
Now with the popular app taken down by its creator for largely unknown reasons, it’s time to look at alternatives to satisfy that itch. There are so many copycats out there but these are the five titles I have the most personal experience playing.
The following is a contributed review by Speedyard AKA ShotgunButterfly9. He continues into his Should You Get series by taking a look at the esoteric indie title 9.03m. Be sure to check out more of his videos on YouTube.
If you would also like to contribute a video, editorial, opinion piece, or list about anything geek media related, just follow the instructions here.
9.03m describes itself as a memorial to victim’s of the tsunami that hit Japan in March of 2011. So far so good. Every other medium has been used to explore tragedy, to remember those who lost their lives, to evoke empathy, so it’s great to see games try the same.
It’s just, they shouldn’t do it THIS way.
I had a great time chatting up with my friend and Twinfinite head honcho Yamilia Avendano or “Yami” for short. Check out the interview as we talk about the start of her love of video games, how Twinfinite came to be, and how women are portrayed in video games!
Don’t forget to also watch the bonus videos where we get into the controversial topic on video games being considered art as well as bonus questions on our favorite games of the generation, the next gen console war, and memorable video game soundtracks!
