Anyone who owned a Gamecube may remember a certain title that put game developer Silicon Knights on the map called Eternal Darkness. Since the game’s release in 2002, the studio has released three games including the depressingly abysmal X-Men Destiny and Too Human.
They were also involved in a lawsuit battle with Epic Games which they lost. This resulted in financial loss, destroying all unsold copies of X-Men Destiny, Too Human, and three unfinished and unannounced titles.
Now we get the announcement that a sequel for Eternal Darkness is in the works called Shadow of the Eternals and under a brand new studio called Precursor Games. What do we know about this intriguing project so far? Check out below after the reveal trailer!
So far, we know that Silicon Knights president Denis Dyack will be involved acting as CCO of Precursor Games. This new project will also be crowdfunded meaning the studio will ask for the fans to help finance it (think Kickstarter). This campaign page actually went live early long enough for site InsideGamer to capture some screens.
We can tell from the information here that Shadow of the Eternals will be broken up into several episodes (12 total) akin to The Walking Dead by Telltale Games. The popular “sanity meter” will make a return with suggestions for various effects taken in by the community. I’m not sure whether to be intrigued by this or dismissive of the sheer laziness at work here.
The plot was also revealed which seems to keep the formula of playing as multiple characters and takes the setting to Louisiana.
In Shadow of the Ancients [working title], we follow the investigations of Detective Paul Becker, who is called to one of the bloodiest massacres in Louisiana state history. Only two survivors remain from a brutal conflict between two rival cults at the abandoned Pleasant View Sanitarium: one a suave, clean-cut business man – and the other a hardened, rogue-like biker.
Both men have seemingly lost all memory of who they are – and yet they are compelled to kill each other. As Becker begins his interrogations of the suspects, their combined recollections create the world of Shadow of the Ancients.
You play Paul Becker, a Louisiana police detective. You also play Clara Rusznyák, a handmaiden to the noblewoman, Erzébet Bathory.
Shadow of the Eternals is also planning to be on the Wii U and PC. This shouldn’t be too surprising as Nintendo filed a trademark extension of Eternal Darkness back in March. Is it possible we may get the original title as an HD rerelease down the line? Possibly!
It’s possible that these details may change by the time they become official on Monday. Until then, let us know what you think of this information and also what you’d like to see in an Eternal Darkness sequel.
