Over the years, iPhone games have come in many different genres and present a vast diversity of experiences whether you’re killing time on the bus or during a lunch break. I considered making this a Top 5 but there are just way too many good titles to not mention all of the ones that are worth your download. So, in no particular order, these are the best of the best iPhone games you have to play!
NOTE: Keep in mind that I have not played every game available in the App Store so there may be some glaring omissions (Infinity Blade for example). This is just a list of the ones I have personally experienced. Please respect the choices made and feel free to let us know your favorites in the comments below.
The Goal: Cut up fruit and avoid the bombs to get the highest score.
We start off with an obvious choice here. You’d be hard-pressed to find someone who hasn’t given this touch screen classic a go at some point. Fruit Ninja has become so popular that it has been converted for the Kinect and as an arcade game. There’s plenty of different backgrounds and blades to unlock that will keep compulsive collectors busy.
The Goal: Make it as far as you can avoiding beams, missiles, and other obstacles with the help of your jetpack and miscellaneous vehicles.
The creators of Fruit Ninja strike gold again! This time, they present their own spin on the “endless survival” genre. It has all the tropes of a successful iPhone including simple controls, a whole bunch of upgrades, and that “just one more game” addicting nature. All of the different vehicles you can use also gives each game a fresh new approach.
Plants vs Zombies
The Goal: Protect your lawn from the undead utilizing sunflowers, peashooters, and other freshly grown guardians.
Another huge game franchise, Plants vs Zombies has been on almost every platform imaginable. There’s even a pinball table made after it! It’s arguable that this tower defense game popularized the genre thanks to its humor and variety of levels, zombies, and plants. The sequel, slated for a spring 2013 release, will hopefully build off of what made the original so awesome.
The Goal: Make it across America to find safety in the zombie apocalypse.
You have more than dysentery to be afraid of in this well-made parody of Oregon Trail. Although admittedly difficult, any zombie fan who remembers having to keep their supplies up and their comrades healthy on their school’s Apple II computer will surely appreciate this. Just be wary of infected party members who may come back from the dead!
The Goal: Match up three or more jewels in a row to get the highest score.
Yes, I know. This was another obvious choice though. Almost everyone has played Bejeweled (or some form of the “match three” game type) when killing time. What better platform to kill time on than on your iPhone? This version of Bejeweled Blitz is arguably the best way to get the highest scores since your finger will likely be faster than your mouse. Getting the big boosts (Phoenix Prism in particular) also helps!
Angry Birds Star Wars
The Goal: Take down Darth Vader and the evil Empire’s pigtroopers with your rebel birds using blasters, lightsabers, and the Force.
I’d be a little hard-pressed to not include an Angry Birds game in here. Luckily, the latest title proves to be well worthwhile of your time whether you’re a Star Wars fan or not! Even if you have played through all of the other entries in this popular franchise, Angry Birds Star Wars does an excellent job combining elements from all of them and making it work within the Star Wars brand. The extra powers and abilities of each bird introduces unique puzzles that will make Lucas fans and haters alike enjoy this all the same.
