Tom Hardy takes lead role in ‘Splinter Cell’ movie

When word originally broke out that there would be a movie based on the popular spy game franchise Splinter Cell, fans immediately asked themselves, “Who would play as Sam Fisher?” I’ve heard many ideas including (ugh) George Clooney. It looks like the search is now over as series developer Ubisoft announced that Tom Hardy will be take star billing for the film.

Hardy has seen himself in a number of prominent roles lately ever since his breakout performance as English prisoner Charles Bronson in the film Bronson. Ever since then, he has been in a number of well-received hits including Inception, Warrior, and The Dark Knight Rises. This leading role in Splinter Cell will be a true test of his acting chops since Ubisoft hopes to make this into a new franchise.

I can definitely see why Hardy won this role. For one thing, the man is in incredible shape. His character in Warrior just looked like an unstoppable beast to say the least. On top of the looking the part, he could certainly play it too. Despite being restricted in his acting as Bane in The Dark Knight Rises, he played up the part as the menacing figure very effectively through his eyes and body language. That’s quite an achievement especially compared to the performances by other *ahem* actors.

Now that we have the lead part out of the way, we can start speculating who will fill in the slot for another prominent character. I am referring to Irving Lambert, Sam Fisher’s handler and guide throughout a majority of the Splinter Cell games. Sadly, the late Michael Clarke Duncan would have made a good choice I think if not for his recent death. James Earl Jones would have been a nice choice too if not for his age.

With those two out, that leaves me with the only other obvious choice in my mind; Laurence Fishburne. He’s got star power, looks the part, and has a commanding presence that would be expected out of the leader of a secret government organization. Unlike Jones, Fishburne would be the perfect age for the role as well.

Let us know what you think of Tom Hardy getting top billing as well as who else should round out the cast in the comments below.

  2. A Splinter Cell movie, huh? It’s actually getting made, right? Because it feels like this hasn’t been the first time a video game movie’s been announced only to have a hundred different issues keep it from seeing release (WoW and Halo immediately come to mind, but I’m guessing there are more).

Well, it’s not like I have anything against the movie. I’m not the biggest Splinter Cell fan, but if this film has any chance of giving VG movies the legitimacy they deserve, I’m all for it. Although to be honest, I hope Keith David gets a role…if only because his voice makes me swoon every time.

  3. Yep, it looks like this is happening for real especially after getting Hardy on board. Ubisoft has been pretty aggressive turning their gaming properties into movies with this as well as getting Michael Fassbender on board for Assassin’s Creed. I’m curious to see if the stigma of movies based on video games changes in the near future.
