Grand Theft Auto has become one of those franchises that transcends the video game industry. Grand Theft Auto III brought the series to 3D with great success and controversy and each title thereafter has been bigger ever since. We have seen an increasing “cinema-like” quality in video games thanks to well-choreographed cutscenes, huge setpieces, and realistic voice acting.
We now get a taste of how much more Grand Theft Auto V intends to up the ante with the release of the second trailer. Here we get to meet the three main characters as well as a look at how expansive and diverse San Andreas has become since our last visit.
Upon viewing this trailer, we get to meet our three protagonists Michael, Trevor, and Franklin. Yes, this will be the first time in GTA history where we get to control three players at once! We will get more into the mechanics on how that works after properly introducing ourselves to these fine gentlemen.
Michael is a former bank robber currently in the witness protection program and going broke fast thanks to his fast-spending wife. It is this situation which pushes him back out into “the game” he thought he left behind. Joining him is his friend Trevor who is described as being a “drugged-out psychopath” and “career criminal” with violent tendencies. So far, he reminds me of the character Lynch from the Kane & Lynch series. Along for the ride is the considerably younger Franklin, a repo man who is described as being “the young and capable one of the bunch”.
The trailer does a nice job giving us an idea on how each of these characters operate. Michael is clearly someone who wants to “enjoy the spoils” of his criminal endeavors in the past. Despite this, the married life has run him dry both financially and emotionally. Early on, we see his wife and his daughter arguing (presumably over a boy staying over?). We also meet Michael’s son James who may have watched one too many rap videos and has a habit of getting in situations that are way over his head.
It seems like Franklin is going to be the one who really gets things moving for this group. For one thing, he’s the least mentally unstable. He has a good head on his shoulders and clearly wants to have a legitimate life even if he needs to pull a few heists to do so. Being almost half the age of the other two also helps.
I can already tell that Trevor is going to be the character everyone will love with his hilarious quotes and erratic behavior. Unlike Michael and Franklin, he doesn’t seem to be tied down by family or a significant other. He’s a gun-for-hire who enjoys his work. Just uhh… don’t ask him any questions on how he gets the job done.
The mechanics in having three controllable characters is unique for the Grand Theft Auto series. Different scenarios will play out depending on who you are since each scene could see any number of combinations of this ragtag threesome. Each character also presents different skills. One example is during a heist, Michael will rappel down the side of the building, Franklin will use a sniper rifle, and Trevor mans a helicopter to come from above. My guess is that you choose who to play as for each segment then you can switch to someone else depending on what you personally want to do next in the mission. It’s an interesting idea that should make for some healthy diversity within the tried and true sandbox formula.
Huge setpieces were shown off also which includes dirt bike races, jumping off trains, and flying out of planes. The GTA franchise has always had some ridiculous situations to take place but this fifth entry looks to push things even further. It looks great in the trailer but hopefully it won’t distract from the actual gameplay a la Resident Evil 6. The last thing we need is for Grand Theft Auto V to become an explosion highlight reel with no substance of “Michael Bay-hem” proportions.
