UPDATE: Ben Savage and Danielle Fishel are officially on board to play as their original characters Cory and Topanga.
It’s TGIF for a new age with the announcement of the sequel series to the popular ABC show Boy Meets World. The new show, titled Girl Meets World, will take place some time after the original show ended. Will it be any good? Are we going to see anyone from the old cast? What’s it even about?
So far, we know that Girl Meets World will revolve around the daughter of iconic television couple Cory and Topanga. Riley will be the name of this new protagonist. She has an older brother named Elliot as well as her best friend Maya. Details on her personality came up from audition details.
“Indelible personality. An adorable girl on the cusp of whatever comes next in life, and wanting to rush into it head first. She is fiercely loyal to her friends, and spends most of her time juggling the obstacles that life throws her way… There is no obstacle in this girl’s world that can dampen her bright spirit and eternal optimism.”
So clearly we have brand new characters to follow this time around. We also know, however, that both Ben Savage (Cory) and Danielle Fishel (Topanga) have been approached in order to reprise their roles. Nothing is etched in stone quite yet but that does beg the question if we’ll see the likes of other popular characters namely Cory’s best friend Shawn and the ever-popular Mr. Feeny.
If Mr. Feeny is going to be on the show, I can’t see it being any more than a bit cameo here and there. For one thing, the actor William Daniels is getting pretty up there in age. This is the same man who played as Dustin Hoffman’s father in the 1967 classic The Graduate! It has also been confirmed that Cory is working as a history teacher in his daughter’s school which will likely make him the “Feeny” of this series.
Spinoff shows haven’t had the best track record but I’m actually pretty interested to see what can come out of Girl Meets World. Like many kids who grew up in the 90’s, I was a fan of the original show and hope to see some of that same fun and charm brought back with a modern spin.
